The 2014 Community First Fox Cities Marathon will take place this weekend, this is a whole weekend of events planned with the whole family in mind. It all kicks off tonight September 19th at 4:00 PM at Appleton North High School!

This years weekend of events kicks off with the Guardian Kids Fun Run. The 2014 Guardian Kids Fun Run will take place at the Appleton North High School Track & Field complex.  Join us this year as kids will be able to run and finish on the state of the art high school track complex! Below is important times for this event:

4:00 p.m. Registration

4:00 – 7:00 p.m. - Huggies® Diaper Dash & Toddler Trot- FREE!!

5:30 p.m. Mini-Dash

6:30 p.m. 1/4 Mile Race

7:00 p.m. 1/2 Mile Race

When you register for the Guardian Kids Fun Run you will be asked which race your child will be running. This is to help us coordinate the runs the most efficiently so everyone enjoys the experience and has fun!

The weekends events continue with the Health & Wellness Expo which also kicks off on Friday, September 19 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The 2014 Network Health Health & Wellness Expo returns to the UW-Fox Valley Field House and Communication Arts Center. This event features high-quality vendors with many of the products, samples and latest developments in sports, fitness and nutrition that our participants have come to expect.

The action continues on Saturday, September 20, 2014 – 9:00AM with the Affinity Medical Group Orthopedics & Sports Medicine 5K Run/Walk! Run, jog or walk the exciting 3.1 mile course, starting and finishing at Riverside Park in Neenah.  Not only does the course feature flat terrain and residential neighborhoods, the final mile is along beautiful Lake Winnebago.  Finishing at the same location as the Sunday Marathon & Half Marathon participants, you’ll experience an energy and excitement unmatched at any other 5K event! All participants will receive a custom-printed short-sleeve shirt, finisher medal, and post-race refreshments. The Affinity Medical Group Orthopedics & Sports Medicine 5K Run/Walk is also stroller and dog friendly!  The little riders and furry friends do not need to be registered. An event designed with the entire family in mind!

Sunday September 21st is the grand finnally for the weekends events with three races! The ThedaCare Half Marathon, the Orthopedic & Sports Institute Relay Marathon, and the Community First Fox Cities Marathon. 

The ThedaCare Half Marathon Open Division begins at 7:00 a.m. with the Competitive Walk Division starting at 7:05 a.m. in front of the Barlow Planetarium on the University of Wisconsin Fox Valley campus in Menasha. The 13.1 mile route will follow the Marathon course until mile 2.25 where it splits off on its own before rejoining the last 8 miles of the Marathon to the finish line.  The course features a flat terrain with only one bridge overpass at mile 2. All Half Marathon finishers receive a 2014 custom printed short sleeve technical FINISHERS shirt and a Finishers medal to commemorate their race participation and finish at the 2014 ThedaCare Half Marathon!

Round up your family, friends, or co-workers and get in on the excitement of the Orthopedic & Sports Institute Relay Marathon!  Relay teams are comprised of 2-5 people, each of whom runs one (or more) leg of the race and hands off the timing tag to the next runner at pre-set relay exchange zones. Team members will wear a timing tag on a strap attached to their race bib and will hand off the tag to their teammate at designated Relay Zones.  Relay legs vary in distance (see below). All participants receive a 2014 custom printed short sleeve technical shirt and a finisher’s medal to commemorate their race participation and finish of the 2014 Orthopedic & Sports Institute Relay Marathon!

The Community First Fox Cities Marathon begins in front of the Barlow Planetarium on the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley campus in Menasha and makes its way through seven Fox Cities communities before finishing at scenic Riverside Park near downtown Neenah. We offer a 6:00 a.m. early start ONLY for participants expecting to finish in 7+ hours.  The earlier start time allows you to be able to beat any heat concerns on race day and makes you part of a finish line with Half Marathon & Relay Marathon participants featuring over 5,000 runners and walkers! All Full Marathon finishers receive a 2014 custom printed long-sleeve technical FINISHERS shirt and a Finishers medal to commemorate their race participation and finish at the 2014 Community First Fox Cities Marathon!  For additional information click on this link: http://www.foxcitiesmarathon.org/marathon.html

Quarry Quest!

Quarry QuestDon’t miss out on all the action this weekend at Quarry Quest: An Earth Moving Experience! Quarry Quest is an exciting family learning event that is held at Michels Materials limestone quarry in Neenah, Wisconsin. The event provides an opportunity to educate the whole family about the mining and construction industries.

Quarry Quest is more than just an exciting family experience. This a learning opportunity and a great fundraising event. The fun begins with being able to take a tour a live working quarry, riding on and exploring gigantic construction equipment, and a whole host of hands on activities. Activities include prospecting for fool’s gold, mixing up a batch of concrete, and constructing a wall with bricks and mortar.

Family fun, educational experiences, and rides; all while raising money for children’s charities and the Environmental Education Fund throughout the community. Quarry Quest was an created in 1998 by a team of community organizations in order to help provide a better understanding of the construction and mining industries. The greater goal was to be able to educate the community while raising funds to give back to local community through local charities!

It now includes more than 250 businesses and 1,000 volunteers in order put on the super successful event, each year. Over the last decade the event has attracted 200,000 people and raised more than $1,000,000 for local children’s charities and the Quarry Quest Environmental Educational Fund, which is dedicated to funding grants for classroom supplies, activities and field trips related to earth science, geology and construction.

Quarry Quest 2014 will be held on September 13th. The event kicks off at 9 AM and runs until 4 PM, with lots of activities all day long! This years activities include:

Cool Cranes
Take control of a giant crane for some exciting equipment action.

Diggin’, Dumpin’ an’ Liftin’
Here’s your chance to work the controls of a giant backhoe or loader (along with an experienced operator) and ride high above the quarry in a boom lift.

Cooking Up a City
Learn how to make concrete—watch it firm up right before your eyes.

Brick Laying 101
The original LEGO blocks! Construct a wall with bricks and mortar.

Jammin’ for Gems
Go on a treasure hunt for various colored gemstones. Dig up a buried treasure box with a special surprise inside.

Jewelry Jamboree
Make your own jewelry with these sparkling “stony gems.”

Prospecting for Fool’s Gold
Be a miner for a day—sift through sand for golden nuggets of pyrite! Find a gold coin for a special prize.

Grandparents Weekend at Trout Museum of Art

This special event was designed for grandparents to bring the grandchildren down for a weekend full of fun at the Fox Cities Building for the Arts. The Fox Cities Building for the Arts is home to The Trout Museum of Art, APPLETON BOYCHOIRFOX VALLEY SYMPHONY, MAKAROFF YOUTH BALLET, and newVoices. The highlight of this weekend is the exhibit at the Trout Museum of Art.

Seuss Home Page SMThe current exhibit is Under the Hat: The Many Worlds of Dr. Suess. This weekend take a peek Under the Hat and explore imaginative worlds through the art of Dr. Seuss.  From his well-known illustration art, to the oddities of his ‘unorthodox taxidermy’, to his early work in war-time advertisements—join us to see Dr. Seuss like never before!
